Coming home to yourself after surviving complex trauma and abuse looks different for each person. And deciding to make a plan to walk away from complex abuse in the midst of the abuse itself can be a terrifying decision. You alone can do it, but you can’t do it alone.

Survivors of covert, overt, complex, and/or chronic abuse who attend individual therapy with us tend to present with concerns of:

  • Isolation + emotional loneliness

  • Flashbacks + intrusive thoughts

  • Hypervigilance, anxiety + flight of thoughts

  • Irritability and severe mood changes; pervasive depression symptoms

  • Codependent coping traits; i.e. adult children of alcoholics

  • Insomnia or trouble sleeping

  • Feeding/eating disorders

  • Self-harm or self-destructive behaviors

  • Substance or behavior addiction

  • Pervasive self-doubt + low self-esteem

  • Body image disturbance, body dysmorphia

  • Attachment issues, i.e. adult children of emotionally immature parents

Licensed therapy and counseling for individuals are 60 minutes. The initial session is an assessment session, used to gather information and more information surrounding the presenting concerns and treatment goals. By the end of your first session, you can expect to have clearly established treatment goals for your time in therapy. Session lengths and frequencies are determined collaboratively by the client and the clinician after the initial assessment.

Couples + Family Therapy

  • In-Person Therapy in Cincinnati

  • Virtual Teletherapy in Ohio and Illinois

Every marriage and family is unique and comes with it’s own set of strengths and challenges. At ARC, we believe that not all couple and family conflict is “bad”, and most presenting concerns can be effectively treated with couples therapy because the conflict is expressed and worked through together.

Client and family presenting concerns that we most commonly see in our couples and family therapy are symptoms or complaints of:

  • Consistently feeling unheard

  • “Walking on eggshells”

  • Intimacy + emotional connection challenges

  • Frequent arguing and criticism

  • Feelings of resentment and/or contempt

  • Habits of defensiveness or stonewalling (i.e. silent treatment)

  • Considering separation

  • Difference of opinion in parenting styles/approaches

  • Blended family challenges, including boundaries and/or fostering connection

  • Emotional loneliness in one/both partners

  • Codependent coping in one or both partners

  • Rebuilding trust after a betrayal

Knowing when to seek marriage and family counseling can be tough to discern, whether you aren’t sure if you’re “just in a rough season” or if you’re heading toward separation. Luckily, marriage counseling can be effective for both. Ideally, both/each person involved will agree to attend; wherein our team of expertly trained professionals can support you in implementing strategies and tools to change the way you communicate as you both work to shift unhealthy dynamics in your relationship(s).

At ARC we are an LGBTQ+ safe and affirming practice. Our family therapy services for parents and minors starts at age 12+. Our licensed couples and family therapy sessions are 75 minutes. The initial session is an assessment session, used to gather information surrounding the presenting concerns and treatment goals. By the end of your first session, you can expect to have clearly established treatment goals for your time in therapy.
